Urvit Goel, the vice president of global business development for gaming at the blockchain project Polygon, believes that the inclusion of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will bring significant benefits to the gaming industry.
Goel made the corresponding assessments in Seoul last week in an interview with Cointelegraph. In this context, he also explained Polygon's intentions to specifically push NFT games so that they can establish themselves on the market.
Goel sees one of the main advantages in the fact that the traditional business model of video games is at a disadvantage compared to NFT games, because in the former players can buy in-game items, but these cannot be resold or the money invested cannot be returned be retrieved.
In the area of gaming finance (GameFi), on the other hand, users can purchase these items in the form of NFTs and sell them as soon as they lose interest in the game. In short, traditional games operate on a money-in, no-money-out model, which is why Goel says it's definitely in the interest of players to be able to recover at least some of the money they've invested:
“We want to give users the ability to truly own the content they buy. If they want to sell them, they should be able to do so, if not, then not. But even if you only get a cent back, that's better than nothing, right?"
Goel points to upcoming Polygon partnerships in South Korea, which could be an important step in this direction. The video game manufacturer Nexon, which is responsible for the popular title MapleStory, is planning a blockchain version of the game .
According to the expert, the market entry of large companies could trigger “a kind of domino effect”, whereby the switch to blockchain would mean that the companies concerned must have great trust in the technology, otherwise they would not take the risk:
“Such game manufacturers shouldn’t actually come to the blockchain, because they already have a successful business. They already generate billions with their traditional games.”
