Regulators in China are shocked: an anonymous person claims to have hacked and stolen 23 terabytes of data from a billion people . The person then sold the dataset on the dark web for 10 BTC , which is equivalent to about $203,562.
The ChinaDan account claims to have logged into the Shanghai National Police (SHGA) database. This allowed the hacker to obtain a large amount of information such as names, addresses, national identity numbers, contact information numbers, and criminal records.
ChinaDan then published the information on the Breach Forum, a platform for hackers. " The database contains information on a billion residents and several billion case records, including names, addresses, places of birth, national identity numbers, mobile phone numbers, and any details of crimes or cases originating in China ."
As proof, the hacker even included a sample of 750 thousand records with the report. ChinaDan also confirmed that the stolen data was taken from Aliyun's private cloud service. Strictly speaking, this is the Alibaba cloud, which is part of the Chinese police network.
Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) warned about this data theft. In a July 4 Twitter thread, CZ announced that its security team had discovered the data being sold on the dark web.
The data sold includes names, addresses, identity numbers, cell phone numbers, police records and even medical data. Binance said it has taken precautionary measures and increased security requirements in the verification process for potentially affected users.
In a recent Twitter thread, CZ hinted that the cyberattack may have happened because the developer of the government database accidentally leaked credentials while writing a tech blog on CSDN.
China continues to push blockchain projects
Aside from the current problems with hacking and data theft, the Chinese government appears to be continuing to push the adoption of blockchain in their country. The local government has selected 15 regional zones to start implementing the new technology there.
In addition, several applications based on innovative technology will also be tested with blockchain . The test areas include major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Cengdu and southern Sichuan.
