Crypto hype: Pharrell Williams and Keanu Reeves also rely on NFT

 


More and more celebrities are currently jumping on the Web3 bandwagon. The latest names: Pharrell Williams and Keanu Reeves. Musician and entrepreneur Pharrell Williams will be the new Chief Brand Officer of NFT company Doodles. And: Keanu Reeves is starting an organization that wants to support disadvantaged NFT artists.


Doodles , one of the largest media brands in the NFT space , announced on June 22nd in New York that the team has been joined by Pharrell Williams. Williams will join Doodles as Chief Brand Officer and also become part of the Doodles Board of Directors.

"I'm a huge fan of the brand," Williams says of Doodles at the NFT conference at the Palladium Theater. In his new role, he wants to "build Doodles from the core community and take it to new heights and levels." To achieve that, Pharrell is set to support Doodles in its Web3 activities across music, art, animation, merchandise and live events, as reported by NFT Evening .


Pharrell Williams: New album planned

Williams' first official act is already certain. An album called Doodles: Volume 1 is to be produced in cooperation with Columbia Records. Well-known artists should be heard on it. There will also be limited edition visuals and album art by Doodles founder @Burnttoast .


Pharrell Williams has previously spoken about his passion for the NFT space. In May he was one of the keynote speakers at Veecon 2022 . In his presentation, he spoke, among other things, about his view of the possible potential of NFT to change the music industry.


In addition to announcing that Williams will be part of Doodles, Doodles also announced that it plans to launch a more accessible and non-Ethereum-based “Doodles 2” collection soon. And that it has secured a round of funding from Seven Seven Six, the VC fund led by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. As a result of the updates, NFT collections Doodles and Dooplicator saw a sharp increase in trading volume and at times occupied first and third place in the Opensea ranking of best collections.



Keanu Reeves also does in NFT

But there was not only news from Williams. Keanu Reeves is also now doing in NFT, as was announced this week. The Matrix star, along with his partner Alexandra Grant, created a non-profit organization called the Futureverse Foundation, which aims to help artists bring and sell their art in the Metaverse. The project was launched in partnership with Fluf World and Non-Fungible Labs, which also provided the first round of funding of $250,000.


The Futureverse Foundation aims to "make the metaverse accessible to more people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds," Grant told The Hollywood Reporter . Reeves is honored to be part of this "extraordinary program" to support artists and creatives worldwide.



The news is interesting because Reeves was critical of NFT in an interview with The Verge as recently as December 2021. When asked about his interest in cryptocurrencies, he said a friend bought cryptocurrencies for him but he didn't do anything with them. When the conversation turned to NFT, Reeves chuckled that NFT was "easily reproducible" and gave an odd chuckle. He also hadn't heard of the NFT being created in connection with Matrix Resurrections .
