Catalonia is building its own metaverse: Innovation Minister talks about plans



 Catalonia's Director General for Innovation, Daniel Marco, spoke in an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph Editor-in-Chief Alex Cohen about some key steps the government has taken to make the region a digital hub. The interview was conducted at the European Blockchain Convention (EBC) 2022.

Marco explained that the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years has helped draw more attention to the digital economy. He cited Europe as an example, which is working on digitizing the energy business and other digital businesses.

Marco has been Director of SmartCatalonia Government Strategy since 2014 and leads the initiative. With this, Catalonia should become an important global "Smart Country", i.e. a "smart country". Using blockchain technology and the metaverse , the minister is working on a fully digital economy that aligns with the physical world.


He announced that the government was working on building a Catalan metaverse called the Cataverse. He explained:


"Cataverse will use the Catalan language and have a connection to Catalan culture. That's what we want to have in this metaverse. Catalan entities that do something for the culture and can do that in the metaverse."

The Catalan innovation minister also outlined the government's plans to turn Barcelona into a digital hub. A lot depends on the professionals. The government has already introduced various measures and university programs to promote these professionals. He also said:


"We have a very strict policy for recruiting professionals from universities. But we also have qualification programs like boot camps and other activities because we need different profiles."

He added the government is trying to achieve a mix of both, encouraging new talent and attracting more companies with a friendly work environment.


He also spoke about blockchain projects that will allow tourists to interact in Barcelona. The minister gave a project as an example that deals with personal health care. But there are also some other projects that involve public transport

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

  Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

  Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack.
