On May 1st, attackers tried to hack the token bridge between NEAR and Ethereum ( Rainbow Bridge ). They failed 2.5 ETH (currently more than 7,000 US dollars). This was explained by Alex Shevchenko, CEO of Aurora Labs, an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) on NEAR, via Twitter .
The hackers deposited ether through crypto mixer Tornado Cash. A smart contract was used that aimed to have the attackers become valid Rainbow Bridge Relayers.
Relayers are scripts that run on traditional servers and periodically read blocks from a blockchain. These forward them to smart contracts on another blockchain.
A bridge watchdog noted that the submitted block was not on the NEAR blockchain. This sent a so-called challenge transaction to Ethereum for verification.
NEAR was able to defuse the attack fully automatically because the protocol had previously designed the security measures for an attack of this type. The hackers could not loot any money with it.
