Elon Musk making fun of NFTs and Bored Apes?

The new Twitter profile picture of Tesla boss Elon Musk recently adorned a collage of different Bored Apes. In the center of the profile picture is the bored monkey #5809.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) is considered to be one of the most valuable NFT collections ever and, in addition to its own coin (APE), also launched the metaverse “Otherside”.

It is still unclear what purpose the new Twitter owner is pursuing with this. While for some the action is a sign that Musk has become active in the NFT space, for others it seems as if the electric car manufacturer is making fun of the hype surrounding the monkey pictures.

In a tweet, the 50-year-old wrote: "I don't know ... seems kind of fungible". Because Musk didn't buy the NFTs of the Bored Apes, he simply used the collage that the US auction house Sotheby's created for an auction as a profile picture - without permission. Probably to show that the JPGs themselves are by no means tied to a single owner.

In any case, the crypto market is not unaffected by the action of the self-proclaimed “DoGFather”: ApeCoin (APE) briefly shot up by around 20 percent and was now quoted at over 17 US dollars. In the meantime, however, the euphoria has calmed down somewhat.

Since Musk's tweet about the NFT range, 12 Bored Apes have been sold on OpenSea. The floor price of the BAYC NFTs is now 122.88 ETH (currently over $350,000).

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726.
