Crypto platform planned? Meta registers trademarks

 


Meta, the parent company of social media giant Facebook, may be planning to launch a payments platform with cryptocurrency support. 


According to filings filed May 13 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Meta has filed five applications related to a platform called Meta Pay . These motions were for the use of the Meta name in an "online social networking service for investors" that "enables financial trading and exchange of digital currencies, virtual currencies, cryptocurrencies, digital and blockchain assets, digitized assets, digital tokens , crypto tokens and utility tokens".



In March, Meta filed eight trademark applications with the USPTO related to the Metaverse and blockchain technology. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also said on May 9 the company is exploring digital collectibles on Instagram . This can probably be interpreted as a signal for the introduction of non-fungible tokens (NFT). Meta currently includes several major apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Facebook.


Many other companies also want to enter the metaverse, including Mastercard , Visa,  Adidas and Nike. According to the USPTO website , trademark applications take about eight months to process from March to the first trial.


Since Facebook changed its name to Meta in October 2021, the social media giant has announced many initiatives aimed at crypto users. Recently, Meta also opened a Metaverse-themed store in San Francisco for the first time in the real world .
