MetaMask warns Apple users: Phishing possible via iCloud

Crypto wallet provider MetaMask has warned the community about Apple iCloud phishing attacks. MetaMask belongs to the well-known software company ConsenSys.

The security issue for iPhone, Mac, and iPad users is related to the device's default settings, which store the user's seed phrase or "password-encrypted MetaMask vault" in iCloud when the user chooses to automatically back up their application data activated.

MetaMask on Twitter on Monday pointed out that users could lose their money if their Apple password is "not strong enough" and an attacker phishes their account credentials .

To avoid this, users can disable automatic iCloud backups for MetaMask.

MetaMask's warning comes in response to reports from NFT collector and Twitter user revive_dom. On Friday , he said his $650,000 wallet of digital assets and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) was lost to this particular vulnerability.

The founder of the project DAPE NFT "Serpent" described in more detail what happened to the victim. Incidentally, the founder has also helped to attract the attention of MetaMask since he has also shared this story with his followers.

He explained that the victim received multiple text messages asking them to reset their Apple ID password. In addition, the victim received an alleged call from Apple, which ended up being a fake caller ID.

Since the caller did not appear suspicious to the user, revive_dom provided the caller with a 6-digit verification code to prove they were the Apple Account owner. The scammers then hung up and accessed his MetaMask account using the data stored on iCloud.

After MetaMask published the warning today , "revive_dom" criticized the company:

"I'm not saying they shouldn't, but they should tell us. Don't tell us never to digitally store our seed phrase and then do it behind our back anyway. If 90 percent of people knew, I'd bet none of them would have activated the app or iCloud."

The community response has been mostly positive, although there have also been voices emphasizing the importance of using cold wallets and being diligent and prudent when storing assets in a hot wallet.

The 5 largest platforms for non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles

Since the beginning of 2021, non-fungible tokens (NFT) have had no holding back and the sector is setting new records almost every day.  More and more artists, stars and brands are realizing the potential - NFT are well on their way to catapulting the crypto space into the mainstream.  But which collectibles are currently the most popular? What are NFT? NFT are unique tokens that cannot be exchanged one-for-one for an equivalent token.  Any asset that is tokenizable can be an NFT.  This includes, for example, (digital) works of art, trading cards, game items and crypto domains.  Theoretically, however, real estate or securities can also be mapped as NFT. NFTs can be used to transparently map ownership structures on a public blockchain.  This allows them to store value just like real objects, even if additional copies are easy to make.  For example, the original picture of the Mona Lisa is significantly more valuable than a photo, as everyone kno...

CARDALONIA: THE CARDANO METAVERSE OPENS THE GATES!

Have you ever been to Cardalonia? With these words, the Cardano Metaverse called Cardalonia starts the gates. In this 3D world, developers and users can interact with each other. First of all, users have to create an individual character with which they can move online. After that you can enter one of the worlds built by developers with this character. You can also purchase your own land in the Cardano Metaverse via the marketplaces in Cardalonia . This is secured by Cardano's blockchain technology and therefore offers a relatively secure transfer of ownership. Since these are only digital plots of land, it is not yet entirely clear when the plots of land are purchased whether they can also be sold again in the future. A possible profit cannot be estimated at the moment. In Cardalonia, the cryptocurrency Lonia is used. The maximum amount of tokens in circulation is 100,000,000. The team consists of Alice Sand (Co-Founder), Vasil Air (CTO) and Dustan Water (Fullstack Developer). T...
