Major developer platform Github has suspended more than a dozen accounts of Russian developers with ties to companies affected by Western sanctions against Russia.
Among the blocked accounts are both large Russian banks such as Sberbank and Alfa-Bank, as well as individual private developers who have ties to sanctioned companies. However, several accounts that do not have such connections were also blocked in the course of this. Among them, for example, the data analyst Sergey Bobrov, who says he is currently not in contact with any of the companies that are now subject to the sanctions. Since the ban was probably related to one of his previous employers, Bobrov's account has since been restored.
Developer Vadim Yanitskiy is also collateral damage from the bans. Accordingly , he writes disappointed:
"My Github account was suspended without prior warning. Probably because I'm Russian by birth. Didn't it once say: 'GitHub's vision is to be a home for all developers, no matter where they come from'.”
Github is a leading platform for developers to upload their programs and make them available to others. This not only gives the developers reach for their projects, but also allows them to work with developers from all over the world across geographic borders, especially in the spirit of open source. This opportunity for free cooperation and open exchange has now become a fixture in the developer scene.
According to media reports, the bulk of the bans affect companies and developers belonging to or collaborating with sanctioned banks. No crypto company should be affected by the measures.
A few Russian developers have since contacted Github and have received replies explaining the reasons for their respective bans. The platform also provides a link through which those affected can object to their blocking.
Replies from Github to banned developers
Nevertheless, the measures taken by the developer platform cause irritation in the community, because they actually made it their mission to offer "freely accessible open source services for everyone, including developers from Russia".
