Technical difficulties presenting the S22: Samsung makes a presentation in Metaversum

 


Despite complaints about the technical difficulties, attendees said they were happy with the event. The tech giant has shown itself ready to embrace an emerging technology and put the focus on sustainability.


Samsung has unveiled its new premium smartphone, the Galaxy S22, in its Samsung 837X virtual space in the Decentraland metaverse.




Over 100,000 users visited Samsung Unpacked 2022: The Epic Standard of Smartphone Experiences in the first 11 hours after its launch at 13:37 UTC on Wednesday. This makes this event one of Decentraland's most attended destinations to date.




The South Korean electronics group presented the new Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra on a screen in the "Connectivity Theatre" in its own room called Samsung 837X. Metaversum fans could also watch via a live stream on Samsung's YouTube channel and other various social platforms.




Users could pre-order the new products by clicking an icon that took them to the Samsung website. However, there were technical issues with the feature, which many people complained about on Samsung's Twitter profile.




"Did the website crash? I can't even add my order to the shopping cart," said one user . Another user replied that the same thing happened to him. It also said it seemed like "scalpers and robots are trying to steal the show". Scalpers are people who buy products and then resell them at higher prices.




Others complained that they did not receive the NFT reward for successfully completing the scavenger hunt titled Turning Red Hearts Green. The "search" lasts five days and reaches its climax on Monday.






Upon entering the Samsung 837X room, a hologram prompts users to find and collect five discarded cardboard boxes to receive a gift. The gift turns out to be a seed to be planted in Samsung's virtual forest. This is intended to underscore the company's focus on sustainability.




In return for sowing the seeds, users should receive a heart badge. To receive the actual gift, they must return on Valentine's Day (to show their love for the forest). There they can then exchange the badge for an "exclusive new piece of clothing".




Despite the technical challenges, users were generally happy with Samsung's focus on climate and willingness to embrace emerging technologies. User "CheddarQueen" also attended the event and told Cointelegraph that she really liked the "sustainability aspect" of the event:




"Many people say that the metaverse separates us from the natural world, but this challenge proves otherwise."


On the other hand, some of the mainstream media that covered the presentation were not overly impressed. Cnet criticized that it was an "example of what not to do when using the metaverse for a product launch".




"This could have been great fun, but instead it felt rushed and incomplete. This was a halfhearted attempt by Samsung in a long line of cultural zeitgeist moments."




The Samsung 837X room on Decentraland first opened on January 6th . It is a virtual replica of the actual store at 837 Washington Street in New York City.





In the same month, Samsung announced a partnership with blockchain technology company Veritree. Together they want to plant 2 million mangrove trees in Madagascar in the next three months .
