Nintendo is interested in NFTs and the Metaverse



 Nintendo has reportedly shown interest in NFTs and the Metaverse, but indicated it has yet to define what it might do in those areas.


Following Nintendo's recent financial results, the company held a Q&A session covering NFTs and the Metaverse, among other things.


According to MST Financial senior analyst David Gibson, Nintendo has indicated it is interested in this space and sees "the potential" for the company. Nintendo reportedly said:


“The Metaverse is attracting the attention of many companies around the world and we believe it has great potential. Also, when the media talks about the Metaverse, software like Animal Crossing is sometimes cited as an example, and that's something we're interested in. On the other hand, it's not easy to define what kind of surprise and fun the Metaverse can offer to customers. As an entertainment company, we need to think about how we can offer new surprises and fun. If we can find a way to get our 'Nintendo approach' across to a lot of people in an easy-to-understand way, maybe we can consider something, but we don't think that's the case at the moment."


While it worries some that Nintendo has publicly stated its interest in NFTs and the Metaverse, it's important to remember that the company doesn't appear to have any immediate plans in this area. Nintendo often talks about how central user experience is to everything it does, and that seems to be one of the main issues with NFTs and the Metaverse.


In the games industry in particular, developers and publishers haven't had the greatest success with the introduction of NFTs. Both Team17 and GSC Game World have had to cancel previously announced plans due to numerous setbacks, and both Sega and EA have also appeared to be trying to distance themselves from their previous stance on NFTs.
