Bitfinex Hack: FBI Seizes $3.6B in Bitcoin

 


Investigative authorities made a breakthrough in the spectacular Bitfinex hack. The FBI seized over $3.6 billion. At the same time, the authorities arrested a Manhattan couple who are said to have laundered funds from the theft.



On February 8, investigative authorities in the USA had their first success in the Bitcoin hack of the Bitfinex crypto exchange .

As Reuters reports , the FBI has now seized over $3.6 billion in cryptocurrencies. It was the "largest seizure of funds by the Justice Department to date," Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco told the news agency.

At the same time, a couple from the New York borough of Manhattan was arrested. You are accused of money laundering.

According to estimates by the Justice Department, Ilya L. (34) and Heather M. (31) are said to have laundered around 71 million US dollars in Bitcoin - today's value: 4.5 billion US dollars.

The suspects were brought before the magistrate on Tuesday.

In early February, analysts observed movements in a wallet associated with the hack totaling $2.5 billion.

The Bitfinex hack of 2016 is considered one of the biggest thefts in the young history of crypto space. At that time, attackers stole almost 119,000 Bitcoin.
