Twitter allows verified NFT profile pictures

 


Twitter has activated a new feature that allows users of the platform to officially verify the NFTs used for their profile pictures. Previously you could just copy these with a right click, there was no proof of ownership without checking the Ethereum blockchain.

The feature, which launched on January 20, is only available to paid subscribers to the Blue service. Official NFTs are highlighted with a six-sided border instead of the traditional circular border used for profile pictures.


This move marks a milestone for the company in the NFT space. Twitter has emerged as the platform for the crypto industry in recent years.


There are ways for hackers to copy images, use them to mine an NFT with a blockchain address, and upload them as a profile picture. Twitter has yet to confirm how the company intends to deal with such incidents.


Esther Crawford, the company's product lead, said Twitter is positioning itself as the social network for discovery, conversation and education around NFT, blockchain and cryptotechnology.


“Crypto is a key pillar of Twitter's future. We want to support this growing interest from developers to use decentralized apps to manage virtual goods and currencies.”


Twitter uses a third-party API to retrieve a user's NFT from the OpenSea Marketplace. This serves as verification. If problems occur with OpenSea, Twitter may not be able to verify the images and tokens.


Social networks are currently increasingly dealing with NFTs. Meta is also reportedly working on plans to allow users to create and sell NFTs on Facebook and Instagram marketplaces.


In November, Twitter said it will create a division that will focus on NFTs, crypto, dApps and blockchain technology.



In 2021, the NFT ecosystem experienced tremendous growth that is still continuing. According to Nonfungible.com, $517 million in NFT sales were made last week. Around 277,509 NFTs are said to have been sold on primary and secondary markets.

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

  Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

  Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack.
