Binance becomes sponsor for AFCON: promoting crypto acceptance in Africa

Binance partners with the Confederation of African Football and sponsors the TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations.

The TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the largest men's soccer championship in Africa, began on Monday. At the same time, Binance announced that the exchange has become an official partner of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and is sponsoring AFCON 2021. The exchange is thus the first crypto and blockchain sponsor of this event.

As part of this sponsorship, Binance also wants to advertise the CAF's social media content. For example, the assists of the day, the assists of the week and the assists of the tournament are highlighted. The content is about games from five cities in Cameroon in all six venues.

Veron Mosengo-Omba, General Secretary of the CAF, was "delighted to welcome Binance as the official sponsor of this year's AFCON". Mosengo-Omba said he was optimistic that this partnership would take African football to a new level.

AFCON 2021 is the start of African sporting events and will last until February 6th.

The partnership between Binance and the CAF came about as part of a campaign to provide financial services to Africans. According to Binance, they usually have very limited access to banks and other financial institutions. According to its own information, Binance has already given free crypto courses to over 541,000 Africans.

Binance's director for Africa, Emmanuel Babalola, said: "Football is the most popular sport in Africa." He hopes this sponsorship will "further reinforce our mission to make crypto a mass phenomenon on the continent."

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets.
