Hands up! Interpol storms the Metaverse



 Interpol explained that a major reason for entering the metaverse was that bad actors were already using the technology to carry out crimes. Public acceptance is likely to increase significantly over the next few years.


"Criminals are already exploiting the Metaverse. The World Economic Forum has warned that social engineering scams, violent extremism and misinformation may pose particular challenges," the statement said. In addition it said:


"As the number of Metaverse users grows and technology advances, the list of possible crimes will continue to expand, including possible crimes against children, data theft, money laundering, financial fraud, counterfeiting, ransomware, phishing, and sexual assault and harassment. "

People have gone to jail for their actions in the Metaverse. Last month, a South Korean man was sentenced to four years in prison for molesting children in the Metaverse and tricking them into sending suggestive photos and videos.


At the New Delhi event, Interpol also revealed plans to set up a department to deal with fighting crypto-crimes . Interpol Secretary General Juergen Stock emphasized that this dedicated unit is necessary as many law enforcement agencies are currently unable to keep up with the complexity of the sector.


Praveen Sinha, special director of an Indian law enforcement agency, also stated that monitoring cybercrime has become increasingly difficult due to its global nature and coordination is an important factor that would make the job easier.


"The only answer is international cooperation, coordination, trust and real-time information sharing," Sinha said.

In the new Interpol metaverse, registered users can visit the platform and take a tour of a "virtual facsimile of the Interpol General Secretariat in Lyon" and take part in forensic investigation courses, among other things.


Interpol hopes its Metaverse will provide a streamlined and more efficient way of communicating and collaborating between different agencies around the world. The education and training of students/new entrants was also highlighted.

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

  Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

  Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack.
