The Sandbox Instagram account hacked: They wanted to rent BAYC-NFTs

 


Metaverse platform The Sandbox has discovered that its Instagram profile has been hacked. This one attempted to rent Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs from multiple users on the social media platform.


The profile of the NFT platform was hacked on Thursday. The attackers advertised a fake raffle in which unsuspecting users could allegedly win a Season 4 LAND.


The company said its two-factor authentication and other security measures were bypassed to promote this fake raffle. The profile's website URL was changed and one user claimed they lost NFTs when they clicked the fake link.



The fake website asked users to connect their web wallets in order to be able to participate in this deceptive sweepstakes.



Sebastien Borget, Sandbox's co-founder and chief operating officer, said the hackers had approached a number of users on Instagram with profile pictures of Bored Ape Yacht Club to "rent" their NFTs. They offered 40 Ether ( ETH ) to be allowed to use the BAYC NFTs for 24 hours.

According to Borget, The Sandbox was able to regain control of his Instagram account a few hours later. The posts promoting the fake promotion were still visible at press time.


The NFT-powered Metaverse platform has worked with many big brands and celebrities since its alpha launch in November 2021 . Paris Hilton and Snoop Dogg have previously collaborated with the platform. Also, big brands like Adidas launched NFTs garments that came out on The Sandbox and other Metaverse platforms.


The Sandbox team told Cointelegraph they are working with Instagram's security team to conduct a security review and audit of the incident. The team declined to comment further until more details are known.

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

  Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

  Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack.
