The EU project Ensuresec to protect e-commerce systems in the digital single market ended at the beginning of September 2022 and was evaluated by EU experts. The experts of the European Commission came to the conclusion that the project, which ended in June, has achieved all the expected goals. In the final assessment , the work done by the IOTA Foundation and project partners was recognized as groundbreaking for new security solutions to protect against cyber attacks.
Tools for more security in e-commerce
In May 2020, the Ensuresec project was launched as one of the first European Horizon 2020 projects. The IOTA Foundation provided a number of tools to improve transaction security and the security of electronic commerce.
Ensuresec aimed to provide applications whose use should ultimately lead to better protection against cyber attacks. It was also hoped that the project would provide data in order to be able to develop effective mechanisms for restoring IT security after cyber attacks. The tools used collected signals and information from the e-commerce infrastructure. After evaluating the data on AI algorithms and machine learning processes, many insights were gained to make processes more secure and increase IT security in networks.
The project also focused on tools for authentication and authorization in the e-commerce environment. The Communication Monitor, for example, collected anonymous information about all payment activities made on an e-commerce platform. After evaluating the data, it was possible to automatically ward off social engineering attacks such as identity theft.
Project funds and IOTA participation in EU projects
During the development, the IOTA Foundation was able to draw on project funds from the public sector. As part of the project, IOTA Tangle, IOTA Streams and IOTA Identity have proven themselves as tools for other tools to secure e-commerce structures.
With the completion of Ensuresec, IOTA's commitment in this area apparently ends, because follow-up projects are not planned. Other projects with IOTA participation also end without continuation. In the case of Gaia-X, which is supposed to develop visions and solutions for IT mobility solutions of the future, there was speculation at the beginning of the year about funding from the Federal Ministry of Economics. In the meantime , the Block-Builders portal has announced an end to IOTA's involvement in this EU project. IOTA is apparently still involved in the EBSI (European Blockchain Services Infrastructure) and Secant projects.
