Thai central bank plans CBDC test phase

 


The Bank of Thailand wants to start testing a CBDC later this year. The central bank announced this in a press release .

Accordingly, the test phase, which is planned until mid-2023, should involve 10,000 retailers and three companies.

The pilot project is divided into two priorities: Foundation Track and Innovation Track. The Foundation Track explores the efficiency and security of the new payment system.

The innovation path focuses on programmability, “which will facilitate the development of innovative use cases for CBDC, leading to new financial services for a wide range of customers.” 

In order to promote research on the central bank digital currency, the central bank announced the so-called “CBDC hackathon” to “propose ideas on the application of the central bank digital currency (CBDC) to promote innovation in finance and business.”

The application phase runs until September 12th. You can win up to 100,000 baht, the equivalent of almost 3,000 euros.
