Uniswap: Phishing attack causes panic and losses

 


Shocking moment for Uniswap, because unusual transactions were observed on the Ethereum blockchain yesterday. Suspicion quickly arose that Uniswap could have a gap in its smart contract and billions of US dollars are at risk. However, this view has not been confirmed so far.


Instead, it looks like a large-scale phishing attack is or was underway. Accordingly, Uniswap users were given the impression that they were entitled to an airdrop. In fact, when they tried to collect the supposed airdrop, they were redirected to a fake site and robbed.


Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao also became aware of the matter and spoke of a loss of around 4.7 million US dollars a few hours ago. Uniswap founder Hayden Adams confirmed the phishing attack on Twitter and appealed not to open any suspicious links. However, the amount of damage could be much higher and has not yet been finally confirmed.


Solana could also become a target

According to Harry Denley, the attack could also be reproduced on the Solana blockchain. Denley is a security expert at Metamask and analyzed the incident extensively and published his findings last night.


In fact, the method used does not appear to be new, as Denley described it extensively on his blog back in February 2022 . According to them, it always starts by sending users tokens and redirecting them to fake websites when trying to sell or redeem them. There they should then use a pretext to confirm further transactions, which ultimately lead to a total loss and allow the perpetrators to clear the wallet.


According to Denley, the attack started by sending users tokens that, upon cursory inspection in Block Explorer, appear to actually come from Uniswap.
