Reddit Enables NFT Profile Pictures: Which Companies Are Following?

Social media company Reddit is now allowing its users to use NFT profile pictures. Reddit Pro-Krypto had already attracted attention in the past.

Not so long ago, the crypto space believed that NFTs were just a trending topic. We can now see that the trend is here to stay. With the social media company Reddit, another company is now contributing to the adaptation. Users can buy NFT profile pictures without owning crypto – and at a fixed price.

Specifically, this is a marketplace where users can buy avatars for their profile. All you need is a credit or debit card and your own Reddit wallet. Reddit takes any price speculation out of the avatars – the price should be fixed for everyone in advance.

Users can purchase the avatars at various price levels of $9.99, $24.99, $49.99, $74.99, and $99.99. In keeping with the spirit of NFTs, artists working on the collections receive a 50% royalty on any items resold.

Many of the artists are from Reddit's own communities like r/Comics, r/ProCreate, and r/AdobeIllustrator.

It should be several thousand pieces of art with a total of 90 designs. These are to be mined on the Polygon Blockchain, which is becoming increasingly popular among users. The reason for this is the extremely low mint and transaction fees.

This even allows Reddit users to mine the NFTs on-chain. With other collections, it often happens that the assets are simply stored on an Internet server and are therefore not decentralized. Reddit's Vault Wallet allows users to manage the avatar after purchase.

As of today, the avatars are only available to members of the exclusive r/CollectibleAvatars group, and will be available to the vast majority in the coming weeks. Wallet handling reports, AMAs with artists and exclusive posts are also coming soon.

In addition to the usual art, users can look forward to a limited edition that grants them special license rights. This means that the avatar can be used on other platforms besides Reddit and additionally edited in the “Avatar Builder”. So your Reddit profile picture will even glitter in the comment column for the special avatars.

Reddit is leading the way – companies are storming into the space

After users were able to use any Ethereum NFTs as a profile picture on Twitter and Reddit last year, the question arises as to what other features will follow.

“In the future we see the blockchain as a tool for more power and freedom in the communities. Reddit has always been a showcase of what decentralization can look like online.”

The company's statement at least gives hope for further features in the near future. Reddit is particularly proud of the fact that the communities are managed by the members - we want to help them with that.

However, the company is not alone in the space! After Facebook has already put the NFT support on Instagram into operation, some features of it can already be seen on their own app. eBay, for example, already published its own digital collection in May in order to then buy the NFT marketplace KnownOrigin.

Spotify has been testing a feature that allows artists to promote their own digital collections for some time. The start-up Linktree even provides users with special links for NFT owners.

From offchain to offchain: Statechains meets Lightning

Without a doubt, the most significant off-chain Bitcoin solution is the Lightning network. But in its wake, the statechain has emerged as an intriguing replacement. There is currently a proposal to link the two offchain networks. From an ocean, for example, you can see sunbeams glistening in the water, waves rippling, and possibly a jellyfish drifting toward the light. But you only see a small portion of it. The distance from the sea's surface to its bottom is hundreds of meters. It has dozens of different fish species swimming in it, crabs and starfish crawling on the bottom, shells clinging to rocks, and sea plants climbing up. A completely new world starts where your gaze diverges. You can picture a blockchain like Bitcoin, just like the sea. What you see on the outside is only a small portion of what is actually there; the set of UTXOs (coins) and transaction history that full nodes store are just the beginning of a much larger world. It's the plan, at least. With Bitcoin...

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Although the websites affected by the scam attempt have reacted in the last few hours and deactivated the advertising pop-up, it is still recommended not to connect your MetaMask wallet to ne...

Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack. These numbers are only the lowest estimate, however, as they are based on the lowest price.  At the time of writing, it was still unclear how the hackers gained access to BAYC's official Instagram account. Social media users have pointed out the importance of two-fact...
