Marriage and court cases can soon be settled in the Metaverse

 


The legal affairs of marriage, court disputes and government services could one day be handled in the Metaverse , according to a Singapore government minister.


Speaking at TechLaw Fest 2022 on July 20, Edwin Tong, Singapore's second Minister of Justice, said that even very personal, intimate events like marriage take place online in the Metaverse:


"It would not be unthinkable that, in addition to marriage registration, other government services would soon be feasible online via the Metaverse."

Speaking of the Metaverse, the minister also said there was "no reason why it shouldn't be used for legal services."


"The pandemic has already shown us that even dispute resolution, which used to be considered a physical process that required a lot of contact, can be done almost entirely online."


Tong gave the example that a lawsuit, such as an accident at a construction site, could be viewed in 3D via a "single virtual platform" using augmented reality (AR) technology:


"You can put yourself in the actual tunnel or oil boom to view the construction dispute via augmented reality that represents the actual space."

Tong said the use of such technology would not preclude the traditional in-person hearings. He noted "there can always be a hybrid element".


"I believe such an integrated platform will make the entire dispute resolution process more convenient and efficient, and keep pace with developments in the rest of the world."

Earlier this year, Metaverse platform Decentraland hosted their first wedding in their Metaverse with 2,000 virtual guests and law firm Rose Law Group, which legally formalized the marriage.


The group's founder and president Jordan Rose says this is the first-ever wedding to take place in a blockchain-based Metaverse.
