Fans decide on transfer via NFT – Will Crawley Town soon become a school example?

 


English football club Crawley Town FC has for the first time given its supporters a direct say in the signing of a new player via Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). An example that could set a precedent?


Voting on June 15 was held on a temporary Discord channel, open to both verified club NFT holders and nearly 1,000 season ticket holders.


Preston Johnson, a former ESPN analyst and now co-owner of Crawley Town, told the Daily Mail that NFTs open up a whole new way for fans of the club to get involved:


“Many NFT projects are pure speculation with no real added value, no real meaning. But to have a football club that you cross your fingers for every week, that's a thing that really means something to people."

"If we can get that across to the crypto community, especially if we can actually get promoted multiple times in English football, then this is going to be a huge thing for people from all over the world to get involved in," he said.


Following the vote, Crawley Town announced the transfer of Jayden Davis on a free transfer last week after the 20-year-old footballer passed a medical.


Crawley Town plays in the English Football League Two, but what sounds like the second division of English football is actually only the fourth highest division in English football. The club was bought by American crypto firm WAGMI United in April for an estimated $20 million . The acronym WAGMI stands for We're All Gonna Make It.


The company, founded by Johnson and trader Eben Smith, has set itself the long-term goal of promoting Crawley to the English Premier League (EPL), i.e. the first English league, and beating well-known clubs such as Liverpool FC and Manchester City to play.


WAGMI United also has more than 30 well-known investors, including entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuck and Daryl Morey, athletic director of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team.


In June, the company unveiled an alternative kit for Crawley Town, only available to buy through the NFTs. In addition to a say, the NFTs have other benefits, including free Adidas merchandise and the right to participate in exclusive events.
