Optimism attacker rejects 18 million stolen OP tokens

A bad transfer with serious consequences cost the developers of the Ethereum Layer-2 solution 20 million Optimism tokens (OP) on June 9, with a value of around 35 million US dollars at the time.

As reported, the attacker took advantage of an error made by the liquidity provider Wintermute in synchronizing its Optimism L2 receiving address with the corresponding Ethereum L1 address.

Within 24 hours of Wintermute sharing his research results with the Optimism team, an anonymous hacker stole all 20 million OP tokens from said Ethereum L1 address.

The hacker initially sold 1 million OP tokens for Ether (ETH) and kept the other 19 million.

On Friday, June 10, the Optimism team then announced via Twitter that the attacker sent 17 million OP tokens back to an Optimism Foundation Ethereum address in a total of 17 transfers .

Before returning the 17 million OP tokens, the attacker sent an on-chain message and one million OP tokens to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. In the message, the stranger asked Buterin to verify the Optimism receiving address and send the 1 million Optimism tokens to that address. As assured in the message to Buterin, the attacker then sent 17 million Optimism tokens to the previously verified OP receiving address, returning 18 of the 20 million OP tokens.

As a bonus, the attacker keeps a further 1 million OP tokens in addition to the OP tokens already exchanged in Ethereum.

The Optimism team announced that Wintermute will make up for the missing 2 million OP tokens.

After the announcement of the news, the OP price was able to recover by almost 20 percent to USD 0.98 in the meantime, but is now trading 20 percent lower again in the region of USD 0.80 in the course of the current overall market weakness.

The 5 largest platforms for non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles

Since the beginning of 2021, non-fungible tokens (NFT) have had no holding back and the sector is setting new records almost every day.  More and more artists, stars and brands are realizing the potential - NFT are well on their way to catapulting the crypto space into the mainstream.  But which collectibles are currently the most popular? What are NFT? NFT are unique tokens that cannot be exchanged one-for-one for an equivalent token.  Any asset that is tokenizable can be an NFT.  This includes, for example, (digital) works of art, trading cards, game items and crypto domains.  Theoretically, however, real estate or securities can also be mapped as NFT. NFTs can be used to transparently map ownership structures on a public blockchain.  This allows them to store value just like real objects, even if additional copies are easy to make.  For example, the original picture of the Mona Lisa is significantly more valuable than a photo, as everyone kno...

CARDALONIA: THE CARDANO METAVERSE OPENS THE GATES!

Have you ever been to Cardalonia? With these words, the Cardano Metaverse called Cardalonia starts the gates. In this 3D world, developers and users can interact with each other. First of all, users have to create an individual character with which they can move online. After that you can enter one of the worlds built by developers with this character. You can also purchase your own land in the Cardano Metaverse via the marketplaces in Cardalonia . This is secured by Cardano's blockchain technology and therefore offers a relatively secure transfer of ownership. Since these are only digital plots of land, it is not yet entirely clear when the plots of land are purchased whether they can also be sold again in the future. A possible profit cannot be estimated at the moment. In Cardalonia, the cryptocurrency Lonia is used. The maximum amount of tokens in circulation is 100,000,000. The team consists of Alice Sand (Co-Founder), Vasil Air (CTO) and Dustan Water (Fullstack Developer). T...
