eBay buys NFT marketplace KnownOrigin

The large online marketplace has been dealing with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for some time and also offers them on its website. With the purchase of the NFT marketplace KnownOrigin, eBay wants to deepen this course.

eBay announced the acquisition of KnownOrigin on June 22nd . The purchase is "an important step in eBay's tech-led reimagination that is ushering in a new era of digital collectibles" on eBay.

"eBay is the first stop for people around the world looking for that one, perfect, hard-to-find, unique addition to their collection," comments eBay CEO Jamie Iannone. The purchase of KnowOrigin helps to maintain and expand the leadership role in this area.

KnowOrigin was founded in 2018, which is a long time ago for the young, dynamic NFT division. Unlike OpenSea, for example, where every NFT that exists on certain blockchains can be traded without distinction, KnownOrigin relies more on a curated offer. As a result, the site feels less like a general store a la OpenSea and more like an art gallery.

"We founded KnownOrigin to provide artists and collectors with the opportunity to display, sell and collect unique, authenticated digital pieces," explains co-founder David Moore. With interest in NFTs growing, now is the perfect time to go further with a partner who has eBay's reach and experience. This is the beginning of a new chapter in the KnownOrigin story. "This partnership will help us attract a new wave of NFT creators and collectors."

Details about the partnership are not known. The price is not revealed, nor whether and how KnownOrigin is to be integrated into eBay. It is only known that eBay takes over both patents and copyrights as well as all employees. It is possible that the group is buying less the company and its product and more the human capital.

An FAQ from KnownOrigin's second co-founder, James Morgen, suggests that things will stay the same for now. The team will not change, the assets on KnownOrigin will be integrated into eBay over time, both platforms will set up new features. The gated community model will remain, and so on.

What is clear, however, is that eBay is serious about the NFTs. As early as May 2021, the trading platform integrated NFTs in order to maintain and expand its position among collectors and sellers of unique objects. Apparently, it's going down well with customers, eBay already has a well-stocked NFT section .

In May of this year, eBay, together with the startup OneOf, published its first own NFT collection. This is dedicated to the Canadian ice hockey player Wayne Gretzky and includes 13 animations of Gretzky on the ice rink. eBay followed suit on June 28th. With OneOf and Sports Illustrated , the trading platform publishes an NFT collection on boxing legend Muhammed Ali.

eBay 's “ tech-led reinvention ” is a little more vague. This should form the "future of eBay". It should use technology and artificial intelligence to recognize and fulfill the wishes of the users. Overall, they have already introduced "hundreds of essential changes" that may seem small on their own, but together have an enormous impact on eBay's actions. This ranges from improvements in delivery, payments, QR codes and more - not least the integration of NFTs.

This makes eBay one of the first big tech companies to jump on a business model that was born in the crypto scene. While trading in cryptocurrencies and tokens seems of little interest or even daunting for the big tech companies, NFTs arouse relatively broad interest.

For example, Instagram has also announced that it will test NFTs for selected artists in the US, and Spotify is already testing an option that would allow artists to integrate NFTs into their profiles. Possibly the solution of blockchain and tokens from direct values through NFTs - such as money or securities - seems to have a liberating effect on many tech companies.

The 5 largest platforms for non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles

What are NFT? NFT are unique tokens that cannot be exchanged one-for-one for an equivalent token.  Any asset that is tokenizable can be an NFT.  This includes, for example, (digital) works of art, trading cards, game items and crypto domains.  Theoretically, however, real estate or securities can also be mapped as NFT. NFTs can be used to transparently map ownership structures on a public blockchain.  This allows them to store value just like real objects, even if additional copies are easy to make.  For example, the original picture of the Mona Lisa is significantly more valuable than a photo, as everyone kno...

CARDALONIA: THE CARDANO METAVERSE OPENS THE GATES!

Have you ever been to Cardalonia? With these words, the Cardano Metaverse called Cardalonia starts the gates. In this 3D world, developers and users can interact with each other. First of all, users have to create an individual character with which they can move online. After that you can enter one of the worlds built by developers with this character. You can also purchase your own land in the Cardano Metaverse via the marketplaces in Cardalonia . This is secured by Cardano's blockchain technology and therefore offers a relatively secure transfer of ownership. A possible profit cannot be estimated at the moment. In Cardalonia, the cryptocurrency Lonia is used. The maximum amount of tokens in circulation is 100,000,000.
