Cardano approaches Vasil mainnet upgrade with new proposal

 


Cardano wants to live up to its reputation as an Ethereum competitor, but there have been a few issues along the way. However, community members are excited about a proposal that will usher in the long-awaited Vasil upgrade.

Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), the team behind the development of Cardano, has announced on Twitter that it has submitted a proposal for a hard fork of the Cardano testnet. This step aims to start the countdown to the much-anticipated Vasil mainnet upgrade.


If all goes according to plan, the changes will go into effect on July 3 at Epoch 215 and the Cardano testnet will “enjoy the new Vasil enhancements and capabilities” before going live on mainnet. Vasil was named after the late Vasil St. Dabov, a member of the Cardano community with impressive contributions.


IOHK stated that everything is ready for the testnet hard fork as it has "good chain density to proceed". The team said it will approach the process with caution to maintain an exemplary level of security.


"It is also the most complex program we have ever undertaken," IOHK said in a statement. “And the whole community is involved. As we have said before, our primary concern is that we conduct this upgrade in a way that is safe."


To ensure smooth operation, team members are given a window of at least four weeks to test Vasil on the testnet before upgrading to the mainnet. Reports of the proposal gave ADA price a small jolt to trade at $0.4737.

Vasil will change the game

The Vasil hard fork was praised for the improvements the upgrade brings to the network. Higher throughput and improved script performance to enhance the developer experience are widely expected.


For investors, the hard fork is expected to trigger a price rally. The Vasil hard fork has been pushed back a month after it was scheduled for June 29th. The delay was the result of seven "non-fatal" errors that the team had to fix before proceeding, according to Nigel Hemsley, IOHK's lead for delivery and project.
