Anonymous hacker is served restraining order via NFT

The law firms of Holland & Knight and Bluestone have served an NFT restraining order on a defendant in a hacking case. This is arguably the first time NFTs have been used in a court case.

The so-called "Service Token" or "Service NFT" was served on an unnamed defendant in a hacking case also involving LCX. This is a Liechtenstein-based cryptocurrency exchange from which nearly $8 million was stolen in January. As Cointelegraph reported at the time, the attack compromised the platform 's hot wallets , allowing Ether ( ETH ), USD Coin ( USDC ) and other cryptocurrencies to be stolen.

LCX reported on June 7 that about 60 percent of the stolen money had been frozen and investigations were ongoing in Liechtenstein, Ireland, Spain and the United States. Around 1.3 million USDC has been frozen by the Center Consortium, an organization set up by USDC issuer Circle and crypto exchange Coinbase, following a court order.

LCX said the money was laundered via crypto mixer Tornado Cash but was later traced using "algorithmic forensic analysis." The analysis also enabled the companies to identify wallets associated with the hacker.

Based on all of these investigations, Holland & Knight and Bluestone, the law firms representing LCX, served the anonymous defendant with a restraining order issued using an on-chain NFT. This move "was approved by the Supreme Court in New York and is an example of how innovation can bring legitimacy and transparency to a market that some believe is uncontrollable," LCX said.
