$16 million Optimism token stolen

Optimism , a layer 2 solution for Ethereum, laments the loss of 20 million OP tokens - equivalent to around 16 million US dollars.

Apparently, an exploit in the marketmaker Wintermute's smart contract led to the theft.

“In preparation for the launch of the OP token, the Optimism Foundation engaged Wintermute to provide liquidity to facilitate the participation in Collective Governance for users who acquire OP,” the Optimism Foundation writes in a statement .

For this, Wintermute was allocated a “temporary grant of 20 million OP tokens from the foundation’s partner fund.”

Curious: Wintermute apparently gave the wrong wallet address.

"Unfortunately, Wintermute later found that they could not access these tokens because they had provided an address for an Ethereum (L1) multisig that they had not yet provided for Optimism (L2)," Optimism said.

A rescue operation came too late, the previously unknown attacker managed to "take over the 20 million OP tokens" before the Wintermute team.

So far, one million tokens have been sold from the address.

According to Optimism, Wintermute has committed to “buy back the lost tokens”.

The surgical course buckles by 17 percent in a daily comparison.

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen.
