Gaming in the Metaverse is still pretty uncomfortable - why is that?

At the BlockDown conference in Croatia, we spoke to Bruno Skvorc , the founder of the RMRK app, about combining Metaverse and gaming. It became clear that we haven't really arrived in the Metaverse with our games yet. Everything that can be "gamed" at the moment is actually only the preliminary stage of the Metaverse gaming experience.

Bruno is a professional web developer from Croatia with master's degrees in Computer Science and English Language and Literature. At the BlockDown conference in Croatia, Bruno reported on a toolkit that game developers can use to create game-like experiences in the Metaverse.

“It's a toolkit that you can use to build a decentralized and fail-safe virtual interaction space between people. The whole thing also has an advanced NFT infrastructure that you can then use to actually own your experiences.”

So as you gain experiences with other people in virtual reality, your NFT also receives these experiences as upgrades.

"So when the Metaverse cover goes down, the player loses, but your experiences stay forever."

Innovation and failure - they belong together...

Bruno explains that while many people are suffering from the bear market and the current Terra Luna stablecoin fiasco , the sifting out of over-indebted giants is a positive side effect.

"Luna is going down."

And before we start whining about the regulation of the crypto space (could stricter regulation have prevented the Terra Luna fiasco?), let's first take a look at the adaptation. There are still a few hurdles...

“You can make MetaMask as user-friendly as you want. People won't use it. We need to form a new infrastructure that is fun and where they don't have to worry about reality. Then people will really start using better applications.”

Also, we haven't even gotten to the actual metaverse everyone is talking about:

“The metaverses of today are not metaverses but multiplier games. Here, usernames and passwords are simply replaced with NFTs.”

But in fact, we see a lot of Metaverse games built around the same centralized structure as mainstream multiplayer games. But that's not the biggest problem.

Crypto Gaming: Big Promises, Unsatisfying Results

When gamers then move on to the next game and the rewards dry up, the servers become expensive to maintain.

“This is the fate of all subscription-based MMO RPGs. And this is even worse with crypto because with crypto projects everything is promised up front with zero game development experience. Typically, game developers spend years working on a project before even funding the whole thing. With many new gaming projects, it will be like the ICO phase - we won't remember most of it in a year."

Bruno also explains that many game developers work past the needs of gamers.

“Most people are not familiar with this 3D world. They want to play hyper-casual while waiting for the bus or sipping coffee. That's just not possible."

In addition, gamers have to “start over” in almost every game. Bruno and his team are therefore developing NFTs that can be taken from one gaming experience to the next . So the gaming experiences remain saved as NFT upgrades - and who knows? Maybe one day you will bequeath your gaming NFT to your grandchildren?

From offchain to offchain: Statechains meets Lightning

Without a doubt, the most significant off-chain Bitcoin solution is the Lightning network. But in its wake, the statechain has emerged as an intriguing replacement. There is currently a proposal to link the two offchain networks. From an ocean, for example, you can see sunbeams glistening in the water, waves rippling, and possibly a jellyfish drifting toward the light. But you only see a small portion of it. The distance from the sea's surface to its bottom is hundreds of meters. It has dozens of different fish species swimming in it, crabs and starfish crawling on the bottom, shells clinging to rocks, and sea plants climbing up. A completely new world starts where your gaze diverges. You can picture a blockchain like Bitcoin, just like the sea. What you see on the outside is only a small portion of what is actually there; the set of UTXOs (coins) and transaction history that full nodes store are just the beginning of a much larger world. It's the plan, at least. With Bitcoin...

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Although the websites affected by the scam attempt have reacted in the last few hours and deactivated the advertising pop-up, it is still recommended not to connect your MetaMask wallet to ne...

Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack. These numbers are only the lowest estimate, however, as they are based on the lowest price.  At the time of writing, it was still unclear how the hackers gained access to BAYC's official Instagram account. Social media users have pointed out the importance of two-fact...
