Cryptosat brings crypto satellites into space with SpaceX – at the same time a DeepFake video of Musk is circulating
The blockchain technology in space? A new crypto satellite makes it possible. At the same time, the satellite offers more security than terrestrial encryption techniques.
Cryptosat launched Crypto1, a crypto satellite module, from Florida on May 25, 2022. The module launched alongside the Falcon 9 rocket, designed for SpaceX's Transport 5 mission. This is the first time blockchain technology has been used in space.
Cryptosat's mission is to build satellites that support cryptography, blockchain and ledger applications. "We believe that satellites possess unique properties that make them very well suited to these tasks, and by bringing these platforms into space we can unlock new and exciting possibilities in computing," the company said.
"We're basically joining the Uber of space travel," said Yonatan Winetraub, co-founder of Cryptosat. "Everyone flies into the same orbit, and we are one of the passengers."
Cryptosat uses so-called Cube satellites. The company writes on its website: “Cube satellites are miniature satellites, the size of a coffee mug, made up of off-the-shelf components. The cost of building cube satellites and launching them into space has fallen drastically over the last few decades and will continue to fall as the technology becomes more mainstream. We believe they are ideally suited for applications that require trust.”
Unhackable Crypto Satellites
“SpaceX has put a number of satellites into orbit, each with a different function. It doesn't matter to our service. We hope to be able to offer cryptographic services to our customers here on Earth with our satellite, which will not affect the other satellites at all.”
"Working with a space object is not the same as working here on Earth," said Yan Michalevsky of Cryptosat. “If something goes wrong on Earth, you just open a terminal and fix the problem. When it happens in space, it's not always possible."
He also explained that it will be the first independent cryptographic system that is not dependent on other satellites from other companies. Additionally, the company expects to offer zero-knowledge protocols in the future.
Zero-Knowledge-Proof is an advanced cryptographic technology for securely verifying transaction details. This is often used in voting mechanisms of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAO).
Michalevsky added: “There is a great need for it. When we deal with protocols, especially on Web 3, there are entire financial systems and smart contract systems, a type of digital legal arrangement that depend on the trustworthiness of the cryptography behind them.”
Michalevsky also explained that communications in space would be via radio frequencies, making the systems inaccessible to hackers from Earth.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk shared a video of the successful Falcon 9 landing on Twitter:
On Twitter, however, there is not only more spectacular, but also absurd content to see. The Tesla CEO recently responded to one of many scam videos that scammers kept posting in his name.
Beware of Elon Musk Twitter scams
Scammers created a deepfake video showing an “ Elon Musk ” endorsing a dubious investment project. In the clip, which isn't particularly professionally made, a well-animated version of the Tesla CEO promises that investors will receive "30% dividends every day for the rest of their lives." Thankfully, many people are unlikely to fall for this scam because Musk's voice sounds fake and difficult to understand.
The billionaire responded to the video by saying: "Yuck. I certainly don't." Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus said: “Someone stupid enough to invest in something like this deserves to lose their money. But at the same time, the scammers deserve to spend their lives in prison."
