ZCash is a digital currency like Bitcoin that aims to use cryptography to improve privacy for its users compared to other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. A kind of code fork of the Bitcoin protocol, Zcash has its own blockchain and currency token. Like Bitcoin, Zcash has a total volume of 21 million coins. At Zcash, the average block time is 75 seconds, a block is a maximum of 2 megabytes in size.
Transactions in Zcash are either public or private. In the first case, transactions are structured similarly to Bitcoin transactions. Private, or "shielded," transactions are based on zk-SNARKS, an efficient and expressive variant of ignorant evidence. Zcash coins reside in either a public pool or a shielded pool; as of December 2017, only about 4% of ZCash coins were in the shielded pool, and at that time most crypto wallets, as well as web-based wallets, did not support z-addrs. The shielded pool of zCash coins was further analyzed for security, and it was found that the anonymity rate can be significantly shrunk through heuristic-based identifiable usage patterns.
selective disclosure
Zcash offers private transaction partners a “selective disclosure” option, which allows a user to provide proof of payment for audit purposes. One such reason is to give private funders the choice of complying with anti-money laundering or tax regulations.
"Transactions are auditable, but disclosure is under the control of the participant."
The company has held virtual meetings with law enforcement agencies across the US to explain these basics and has put on record that
"They did not develop the currency to facilitate illegal activities".
Edward Snowden anonymously co-programmed ZCash
Edward Joseph "Ed" Snowden is an American whistleblower and former CIA operative. His revelations provide insights into the extent of worldwide surveillance and espionage practices by intelligence agencies - predominantly those of the United States and Britain. According to the latest information and according to the media release and video from the Zcash community, Snowden has revealed that he worked on ZCash under the pseudonym John Dobbertin:
This video (video link is in the tweet) was published by the ZCash makers. Whether it's all real remains to be seen, as nothing has been confirmed yet: Edward Snowden has n't tweeted for almost two months and hasn't commented on his involvement with ZCash. If everything happened like this, this prominent support will certainly have a positive effect on the level of awareness of ZCash.
The well-known Bitcoin VLOGerin Naomi Brockwell also took up this topic last night: Snowden participated in the creation of Zcash!
It was revealed today that Edward Snowden, famed whistleblower and privacy advocate, was one of the 6 participants in the Zcash „ceremony“ of 2016! In a video just released by Zcash media, he said that he was happy to be involved because it was an interesting project being worked on by trusted cryptographers. He had used a pseudonym „John Dobbertin“ during his participant, and Dobbertin’s real identity had remained a mystery until today.
