Indonesia will levy 0.1% tax on all crypto transactions from May

 


According to media reports, the Indonesian government plans to levy a basic 0.1% capital gains tax and VAT on crypto transactions from May 1st.


According to a Reuters report , Hestu Yoga Saksama, a spokesman for the Indonesian tax authority, confirms that the country will levy "income tax and VAT on cryptocurrencies" in the future, as they are "classified as a commodity and not as a currency". At this point in time, the government is still examining how the collection of taxes can actually be implemented. In the course of the corona crisis, however, the legal basis for the taxation of crypto transactions was already created.


Indonesian trade regulator Bappebti recently reported that crypto transactions in February 2022 were worth $83.8 trillion. rupiah, equivalent to US$5.8 billion. In addition, the number of crypto users has increased by more than 11% from 11.2 million to 12.4 million users compared to the previous year.


As Cointelegraph has reported , the Indonesian government has considered taxing crypto transactions on several occasions. It has been warning its population against using cryptocurrencies as a means of payment since 2014. In December, the Bappebti then recognized more than 200 cryptocurrencies as commodities that can be traded completely legally. In February 2021, 13 trading platforms were again approved as official crypto companies.


The attitude towards cryptocurrencies in Indonesia could well be influenced by religion, because according to current figures , almost 87% of the Indonesian population belongs to Islam. However, the National Ulema Council, an influential association of Islamic scholars, has classified crypto transactions as banned , which may have played a crucial role in shaping how the asset class is treated in Indonesian society and politics.
