At the time of writing, the live price of the NEAR protocol was $19.24 with a 24-hour trading volume of $2.9 billion. The 16th largest cryptocurrency by market cap is rebounding on news that the NEAR wallet selection feature has gone live.


What is NEAR?

NEAR is a unique protocol as it uses Nightshade technology to massively improve transaction throughput. Nightshade is a variant of sharding in which individual groups of validators process transactions in parallel across multiple sharding chains, improving the overall capacity of the blockchain.


In contrast to "normal" sharding, shards in Nightshade create a fraction of the next block, called "chunks". The NEAR protocol achieves up to 100,000 TPS and near-instant transaction finality thanks to a one-second block cadence, while keeping transaction fees virtually zero.
