Matheus Nicolau, the eighth-ranked UFC flyweight fighter, has signed an agreement to receive his future earnings in Bitcoin through payroll service Bitwage, CryptoAdvisor learned in a press release.
The contract, signed on March 21, makes him the first Latin American UFC athlete to receive a paycheck in bitcoin.
The crypto market has seen explosive growth in South America
Originally from Brazil, Nicolau is aware of the importance of Bitcoin. In South America, the market has exploded over the past two years as a result of inflation and other economic pressures.
Nicolau shared:
I'm thrilled to receive my earnings in Bitcoin. As an athlete, I work hard to earn a living, but with rising inflation, I worry that all that hard work is going to waste. By using Bitwage to earn bitcoin, I know I am safeguarding the value of my work.
Nicolaus Manager VinÃcius Las Casas added:
We are very bullish on bitcoin. We want to spread the bitcoin gospel with this latest deal.
The largest payroll company in the bitcoin space in the world
Las Casas will also receive a portion of its earnings in bitcoin through Bitwage, the largest payroll, benefits and billing company in the bitcoin space. Bitwage allows people and businesses around the world to receive their monthly wages in Bitcoin.
They are a pioneer in the industry with their Lightning Payroll products and Bitcoin 401k.
Bitwage CEO Jonathan Chester commented:
Working with Matheus has been a rewarding experience for us. He's an amazing fighter with a champion mentality.
Nicolau follows in the footsteps of professional soccer players Achara Ifunanyachi and Alex Crognale, who similarly collaborated with Bitwage last year.
Some of the UFC's most renowned fighters have left the organization or opted for high-paying crossover boxing opportunities. Fighters can be paid in bitcoin via Bitwage without having to take the UFC on board the service. They can have peace of mind knowing their Bitcoin savings are safe and have the time and energy to focus on training.
Bitwage's services have gone mainstream
Anyone can use Bitwage's services. You register with the platform, get a bank account number and choose how much of your salary or wages you want to receive in bitcoin. Finally, inform your employer of the new account number.
At the moment, Nicolau is enjoying a four-fight win streak. He meets David Dvorak on March 26 in Columbus, Ohio.
