In a new campaign, Greenpeace, the Environmental Working Group and Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen are calling for the Bitcoin source code to be changed. The aim is to switch to the Proof of Stake consensus mechanism.
"Bitcoin uses an outdated technology called Proof of Work to validate transactions," read the campaign manifesto .
Greenpeace itself started accepting BTC donations back in 2014, but stopped doing so in 2021 due to energy consumption.
"Bitcoiners - I know many of you may not believe this, but I'm not trying to work against you here," Larsen tweeted . “Now that Ethereum is changing, Bitcoin is really the outlier,” the Ripple boss also explained in an interview with Bloomberg .
Ethereum is on the home stretch towards Proof of Stake and aims to save 99.9 percent of its energy consumption .
The environmental debate over Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, is a perennial issue. Only recently was a de facto ban on the No. 1 cryptocurrency in the EU averted.
