Tonga accepts bitcoin donations after tsunami

On Friday, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcano erupted in the Kingdom of Tonga .

After the first eruption, further eruptions followed, so that there was also a tsunami on Tongatapu, the main island of Tonga.

Crypto owners then pledged support and want to donate Bitcoin ( BTC ) to help. Twitter user Onair Blair called on Bitcoin supporter and former Tongan government official Lord Fusitu'a to set up a wallet address to donate Bitcoin to Tonga.

With waves up to 1.2 meters high that inundated streets and properties, people have fled to higher ground for safety. At the time of going to press there were no deaths. However, air and water pollution is a concern for aid agencies.

Lord Fusitu'a responded with a BTC wallet address and a link to also donate fiat to support. The address has received a total of 0.10794983 BTC (or $4,625.29) since Sunday.

On Friday, Lord Fusitu'a spoke to Cointelegraph about using geothermal energy from the volcanoes to power bitcoin mining. That would make the country some money. The country has 21 volcanoes and according to Lord Fusitu'a, "each volcano continuously produces 95,000 megawatts". The lord noted that a single volcano could generate $2,000 worth of bitcoin daily to be distributed to Tongan families.

The former government official also noted that the country wants to do the same as El Salvador and adopt Bitcoin as legal tender . On Wednesday, Lord Fusitu'a tweeted that that could happen as early as November or December this year.

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link.
