Russian central bank chief: crypto ban is "very feasible"


 

In a press conference yesterday, Friday, the head of the Russian central bank Elvira Nabiullina rekindled fears about strict crypto regulation in Russia. As reported by Finmarket.ru , Nabiullina said:


“Our stance on cryptocurrencies is skeptical to say the least. Because they are associated with significant risks for private investors and considerable volatility. In addition, cryptocurrencies are in a gray area because they are often used as a tool for illegal business. Because of this, we reject crypto investments. We want to protect the Russian financial system from becoming dependent on crypto transactions, and that is very feasible. "

Nabiullina's remarks come just a day after contradicting media reports emerged from Russia about the planned crypto regulation in the new year. As Cointelegraph had reported , even President Vladimir Putin is now warning of cryptocurrencies and their risks.


This concern is possibly justified, because the former Soviet states are far more susceptible to financial crime such as money laundering or tax evasion than Western European countries. This fact is due in turn to the fact that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many state-owned companies passed into the hands of a few private individuals. A powerful elite, some of which also include very dodgy business people.


The anonymous, limitless and unregulated nature of cryptocurrencies may therefore be an interesting tool for the criminal structures in the country. In order to combat this problem, the Russian government is not only planning appropriate regulation, but also wants to promote the introduction of its own central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital ruble .

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

  Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

  Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack.
