Cyber ​​criminals are trying to take advantage of the current public interest in the new Spider-Man movie by embedding Monero mining malware into pirated copies that spread on torrent websites. So it says in a recent report from cybersecurity firm ReasonLabs.

The company has discovered a torrent file, most likely from a Russian torrent website, containing a self-compiled version of XMRig, a popular open source program used to mine Monero.

The cryptojacking malware is not easily detected as exclusions are set up for Microsoft Defender Antivirus scanning.

Though rather harmless compared to ransomware, Stealth Crypto Mining will slow the victim's computer down a lot as the CPU runs at high performance, which ultimately affects the electricity bill.
