FBI seizes $ 180 million in Bitcoin


 

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has seized $ 180 million in Bitcoin related to the Sony Life embezzlement case.

The United States today brought a lawsuit in federal court to protect and ultimately return more than $ 154 million in funds allegedly stolen from a Tokyo-based subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation and then used by law enforcement during the investigation into the FBI were seized for this theft.

Rei Ishii, a former employee, stole $ 155 million from one of the Japanese company's subsidiaries earlier this year while working remotely, raising concerns about the lack of oversight at the company.

Ishii was able to embezzle some of these funds by forging transactions and having them transferred to his account at Silvergate Bank in California. The stolen money was used to buy 3,879 Bitcoins on Coinbase, which Ishii then transferred to a hardware wallet to disguise the nature and ownership of the funds.

In late May, Ishii began blackmailing Sony Life by claiming that it was impossible for the company to get the stolen money back and that if it filed a criminal complaint, it would go down with him. The FBI managed to track down the funds and confiscate them.

The FBI received "significant assistance" in its investigation from other law enforcement agencies, including the National Police Department of Japan, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the Japan Prosecutors Unit on Emerging Crimes.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin and Ethereum prices rose more than 6% overnight, while the global crypto market also increased its market cap by 6% to $ 2.38 trillion, according to CoinGecko.

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

  Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

  Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link.
