$ 2.4 billion data center in Texas will host Bitcoin mining

 


A Houston-based energy technology and infrastructure company is partnering with the city of Abilene on one of the largest projects in the region's history.

Lancium, announced Tuesday that it will invest $ 2.4 billion over 20 years to build a large-scale, renewable-energy data center in Abilene and Taylor Counties. Abilene is in central Texas, about six hours northwest of Houston.

The renewable energy data center campus will host bitcoin mining and other energy-intensive applications. The project will start with an output of 200 megawatts, but has an expansion capacity of over 1 gigawatt. Michael McNamara, Co-Founder and CEO of Lancium, said:

“We are very proud to be part of the community and to build one of our flagship clean campuses in Abilene. We chose Abilene as the location for our second Clean Campus because the location is ideal, the proximity to the abundant wind and solar energy systems, the highly qualified workforce and the opportunities to grow in the future. We would like to thank the city, the county and all members of the economic development team who worked together to make this important milestone possible. "

Commenting on the whole thing, Misty Mayo, president and chief executive officer of the Development Corporation of Abilene:

“Over the next 20 years, this project is estimated to have an estimated $ 993.4 million economic impact in Taylor County and the city of Abilene. This is exactly the kind of opportunity that the DCOA should find and use for our community. "

The news follows former South Carolina gubernatorial candidate John Warren, who started a new Bitcoin mining company called GEM Mining on Dec. 15. The company is expected to become the largest mining organization in the state of South Carolina. Numerous US states are eager to expand the cryptocurrency industry.

Bitcoin mining can be very lucrative. Bitcoin miners generated more than $ 15 billion in revenue during 2021.

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

  Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

  Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack.
