Bitcoin, like many other topics, became more and more politicized in 2021. Some of the powerful politicians are friends of cryptocurrency, others see a threat to established currencies and even democracy. We summarize the attitudes of some of the most powerful politicians on Bitcoin.

Politicians Opinions on Bitcoin - Joe Biden, 46th US President

The legislative and financial developments in the USA are still one of the most important factors in the development of the cryptocurrency market. As the current US president, Joe Biden is extremely powerful. He can strongly influence the legislation in the USA in connection with financial products. 

Joe Biden is not very popular with friends of Bitcoin. He is one of the politicians who are repeatedly calling for stricter regulations for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Last week he announced stricter tax laws, which was one of the reasons for the stronger correction in Bitcoin of over 15%.

Hillary Clinton, 2016 presidential candidate

One of the politicians who criticized Bitcoin on the last day was former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. At the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, the wife of ex-President Bill Clinton called Bitcoin a threat to the US dollar and certified that it had a destabilizing effect.

Clinton has been very unpopular, especially in the USA, not only since 2016. She is accused of being close to Wall Street and "being bought". For many crypto fans, her criticism is hypocritical, as she herself destabilized other countries with her politics as Foreign Minister under Barack Obama.

Donald Trump

Former US President and real estate billionaire Donald Trump is ubiquitous in US politics. He can continue to mobilize large crowds and his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election is almost guaranteed if he chooses to run. But is the Republican a friendlier politician on Bitcoin than the Democrats?

Several times Trump has expressed himself rather critically about Bitcoin. The politician sees Bitcoin as a danger to the US dollar. This would undermine the original American currency. Trump needs a strong dollar to enforce his America First doctrine. Many crypto fans were disappointed with these statements.

Politicians Opinions on Bitcoin - Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank

ECB President Christine Lagarde also has a critical stance on Bitcoin. EU politicians have not made friends with their low interest rate policy in recent years and have unintentionally promoted crypto currencies such as Bitcoin. Now the EU wants to regulate crypto currencies more closely.

In addition to Bitcoin, Lagarde is also critical of stablecoins. Although these are linked to FIAT exchange rates, Lagarde did not refer to them as currencies. Lagarde's crypto aversion should not decrease in the near future.

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

  Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

  Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack.
