Are NFTs the future of the game industry?

EA CEO Andrew Wilson believes that NFT is the future of the gaming industry. Game developer Burford disagreesHe simply does not see any useful application possibilities for the technology in the gaming sector. None of the benefits often cited by NFT advocates would make sense in his opinion.

NFT fans sometimes say that the technology would allow items to be transferred between games. In Burford's view, however, this does not make sense for a number of reasons. On the one hand, items that are not part of the game would quickly destroy the balance in a game. Then the whole thing wouldn't be fun anymore. Burford also points to the constant advancement in game design.

Items that can be transferred over several titles would have to be adapted again and again by the game developers so that they also fit into the higher-resolution games of the future. “There may be no wear and tear on digital items, but technology is advancing. A 1999 gun is visually unacceptable by 2021, and its value will only deteriorate, ”explains Burford.

The question is who should pay for the constant upgrades of the item that has been sold. "The idea is just as stupid as the expectation that the dealer who sold you a 20-year-old used car without a guarantee will continue to service it." The purchase of an item as an NFT is therefore not a good investment for the players either. "NFT in a game will always go down in value unless someone is keeping it for real money, and that's just stupid," concludes Burford.

The problem with taxation

Burford also raises the question of how game developers should deal with possible tax aspects of NFT. Especially since games are sold all over the world and would therefore be confronted with all sorts of different legal regulations. He also sees disadvantages for players: "Do you really want Bungie to have your social security number, your address and all that stuff so that they can report all NFTs that you buy in the Destiny NFT Edition to the tax office?"

Burford also criticizes the concept of crypto games such as Axie Infinity and other play-to-earn games. “As a game developer, why should I think this is a good idea? The transaction is simple: you give me money and I'll give you a game. The transaction is now complete. I use this money to pay my employees, ”says Burford. Ultimately, only the crypto exchanges and their fees would earn money from such concepts.

In the end, according to Burford, NFTs do not solve problems for which there are no longer any easier possible solutions. Game companies have long been selling digital items for real money. The way via the blockchain would only be an unnecessary detour.

In his blog post, Burford also criticizes those who ask game developers like him to find useful areas of application for the technology. "You are wasting my time by giving me problems that I don't need and for which I don't owe you a solution," says Burford. “This shit pisses me off. We deserve better than you guys. You have nothing of value to add, you have nothing to give. You have no creativity, no drive, no ideas other than 'new ways to get money out of a system that doesn't need me.' From offchain to offchain: Statechains meets Lightning

Without a doubt, the most significant off-chain Bitcoin solution is the Lightning network. But in its wake, the statechain has emerged as an intriguing replacement. There is currently a proposal to link the two offchain networks. From an ocean, for example, you can see sunbeams glistening in the water, waves rippling, and possibly a jellyfish drifting toward the light. But you only see a small portion of it. The distance from the sea's surface to its bottom is hundreds of meters. It has dozens of different fish species swimming in it, crabs and starfish crawling on the bottom, shells clinging to rocks, and sea plants climbing up. A completely new world starts where your gaze diverges. You can picture a blockchain like Bitcoin, just like the sea. What you see on the outside is only a small portion of what is actually there; the set of UTXOs (coins) and transaction history that full nodes store are just the beginning of a much larger world. It's the plan, at least. With Bitcoin...

Phishing attack on popular crypto sites tries to empty wallets

Several major crypto sites such as Etherscan, CoinGecko, DeFi Pulse, and others report malicious pop-ups scammers use to try to trick users into connecting their MetaMask wallets. The phishing attack came from a domain displaying the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) logo. "We are investigating the root cause of this attack to fix the threat as soon as possible," CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong tweeted. The phishing attack appears to have been triggered by a malicious ad script from Coinzilla, a crypto ad network, according to CoinGecko. Etherscan also advises its users not to confirm any transactions that may appear on the website. The attackers attempted to use the hype around the “bored monkeys” non-fungible tokens (NFT) to gain access to the cryptocurrencies of unsuspecting website visitors. Although the websites affected by the scam attempt have reacted in the last few hours and deactivated the advertising pop-up, it is still recommended not to connect your MetaMask wallet to ne...

Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs stolen through phishing on Instagram

Bored Ape Yacht Club ( BAYC ) developers announced on Monday that hackers have hijacked the official Instagram page of the popular NFT collection and posted links to a fake airdrop. Crypto enthusiasts who connected their MetaMask wallet to the rogue website subsequently had their Ape NFTs stolen. Apparently, the attack was planned to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the BAYC collection. This increased the "perceived credibility" of the phishing link. About 100 NFTs are said to have been stolen in the phishing attack . According to CoinGecko data , the minimum price for a BAYC NFT is 139 Ether ( ETH ) or $400,726. So if reports are correct, over $40 million worth of NFTs were stolen in the attack. These numbers are only the lowest estimate, however, as they are based on the lowest price.  At the time of writing, it was still unclear how the hackers gained access to BAYC's official Instagram account. Social media users have pointed out the importance of two-fact...
