The fact that blockchain technology could very soon play a major role in the games industry does not seem to go down well with Steam. With a change in the sales guidelines, the gaming platform is banning all games from its program that either bring non-fungible tokens or cryptocurrencies into circulation.
This means that games can still be based on blockchain technology, but in the end, nothing remains of the actual advantages of the technology. Primarily it is the NFTs that could mean a groundbreaking success for the game industry. Because this not only guarantees the uniqueness of the content but also makes it directly tradable and thus opens up a completely new dimension.
Such content can include, for example, digital properties in one of the game worlds or objects such as clothing. In this way, players get the opportunity to individualize their characters and create value at the same time.
Why is this problematic for Steam?
Officially, Steam does not want to tolerate any content that represents an actual value or monetary value. But the problem is likely to be more complex for the gaming platform. On the one hand, the debate is whether one would legally not step on thin ice if one tolerated the acquisition or trading of any kind of cryptocurrencies and unique tokens within the games. The regulation of the market is progressing but remains too vague on many points. In the end, the operator Valve remains responsible for what happens on Steam.
Another issue is the loss of control of the games and in-game purchases market. Because Steam allows you to purchase items in your own store. For example so-called "skins" with which players can individualize the appearance of their characters. If you allowed a market to develop on the blockchain within the games, then you would no longer be able to earn more. At least not until you would provide your own infrastructure.
For small projects that have hoped to use Steam as a multiplier for their innovative ideas, the ban is bitter. Including for the team around the game Age of Rust.
